How can you navigate through all the Medicare noise? Is any of the information you’re receiving even accurate? Why are there so many options available? Can’t you just make a phone call or sign up for a plan online?
The answer to those questions depends on your situation.
Medicare can be confusing, but it doesn’t have to be. You’ve done your part and now have Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. You may also have a Medicare Supplement (Medigap), a Prescription Drug Plan, or a Medicare Advantage Plan. Alternatively, you might have Medicaid along with Original Medicare, or just Original Medicare alone.
Everything seems fine until you see those commercials or receive those phone calls. You might end up throwing away more pieces of mail. Then, a little voice nudges you, saying, “Maybe I should look into this or at least find out more information.” So, how do you even begin? How can you determine who to trust?
First, you need to filter through all the information to identify what you actually need. Then, ask yourself the following questions:
I am new to Medicare. Do I have what I need?
Are my doctors covered? My prescriptions?
Has my premium increased too much?
Do I need Dental Coverage?
Do I need Hearing Aids?
Has my financial situation changed?
Do I need Vision Coverage?
Do I have to continue to pay my Part B Premium?
Do I qualify for Extra Help or Medicaid?
Do I need durable medical equipment?
How can I pay for a Nursing Home if required?
What do I do if I have cancer?
Can I get help with groceries?
Can I get rides to Doctor Appointments?
Do I have to pay a monthly Premium?
How can I get help with my Diabetes?
I cannot afford my medication. What are my options?
If you answered yes to any of the questions listed above, you could benefit from the help of a dedicated Medicare Advisor and a Medicare Benefits Review.
Plans, premiums, networks, benefits, and prescription drug coverage changes yearly.
Here is what you need to know when looking for some help.
First, any person who claims to be a Medicare Agent/Advisor/Broker would never charge for their service. Any person offering Medicare Services needs to be licensed by the state. They must provide a license number; if you doubt it, you can check with your State’s Insurance Department to verify their number.
A Medicare Agent cannot attend your home unannounced without an appointment.
How are appointments made?
Response to an advertisement either online or by USPS by filling out a Request for Information form
Accepting an appointment over the phone
Setting up an appointment date at a Formal/Informal Sales Event or an Educational Event
Please keep in mind that if you call the 800 numbers or an ad on TV, there is a good chance the Agent on the other end of the line can only provide plans from one Carrier (Insurer), and this means you may not get what you need or are entitled to.
A step in the right direction would be to set up an in-person appointment for a review.
A good Medicare Insurance Advisor is not bound by one Carrier (Insurer). Instead, they can compare multiple plans by multiple Carriers (Insurers) to ensure they are providing the best plan options suited to your needs.
The Advisor needs to review your current Medicare coverage. They should ask if you have Original Medicare (Parts A & B), Medicare + Medicaid, Medigap/Supplement, Prescription Drug Coverage, or a Medicare Advantage Plan. They should also ask what you like or do not like about your current coverage, what you are looking for, and what needs you think you may have.
The Advisor must check for all in-network doctors, hospitals, and preferred pharmacies. There is no reason to change anything unless you want to. The Advisor MUST also review every prescription and check the formularies to ensure they can either beat the cost or stay the same.
They need to be able to provide you with a couple of options and only change your existing plan if it is to your benefit and at the right time to make the change. Overall, they should leave you with peace of mind that they are providing you with the best plan, with no question.
Key Takeaway: Benefits of a Medicare Advisor
Assistance During Medicare Enrollment Periods: Advisors provide support all year round, and also during key enrollment windows so you don't miss important deadlines.
Personalized Plan Comparison: An Advisor assesses your unique needs and compares plans to find the one that works for you. A good advisor will be contracted with all the top carriers so they can compare for you.
Expert Knowledge of Medicare Rules: Advisors stay updated on any plan changes and regulatory changes, ensuring you are well-informed.
Cost Savings: They can identify saving opportunities, understand benefits, and clarify complex cost structures.
