What Happens When You Turn 65?
When you turn 65, you become eligible for Medicare, the federal health insurance program for seniors. Medicare is designed to provide coverage for hospital care, doctor visits, prescription drugs, and more. You will become bombarded by multiple messages, advertisements, and more - even friends and family telling you what to and what not to do.
Having an advocate out of the gate is helpful and important.
Key Medicare Enrollment Periods
IEP - Initial Enrollment Period
This is a 7-month window around your 65th birthday. It starts 3 months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and 3 months after.
During this timeframe, you can enroll in Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B, along with additional plans like Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part C, and Prescription Drug Coverage - Medicare Part D.
SEP - Special Enrollment Period
If you are still working and have employer-sponsored health coverage, you may qualify for a SEP to delay enrolling in Medicare without penalties.
Medicare Basics: What You Need to Know
Part A: Medicare Part A covers hospital stays, skilled nursing care, and hospice, which is usually premium-free if you have worked 10+ years
Part B: Medicare Part B Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, and preventative services that require a monthly premium.
Part C: Medicare Part C - Medicare Advantage: Combines Parts A and B, often with added benefits like dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.
Part D: Medicare Part D is Prescription Drug Coverage.
Medicare Supplements (Medigap): Fills gaps in Original Medicare by covering deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.
